Winner of numerous International
violin awards, Oleg Pokhanovski started his career at the age of 6,
giving his first performance with the Kuybyshev Symphony in Russia.
Mr. Pokhanovski's first teacher, who remained as the most important
teacher in his life, was his uncle, Lev Zaides, a great violinist
himself, whose life unfortunately ended at the age of 39 years in
Russia. His teaching made it possible for Pokhanovski to be accepted
at the age of 10 in the finest school for young musicians in Moscow
- the Special Music School for Gifted Children.
He was subsequently accepted as a student at the Moscow State Conservatory,
the highest music institution in Russia. Here, he inherited the best
traditions of the Russian School, headed by Yuri Yankelevich and David
Oistrakh. Invited to move to the US, he won scholarships to study
at the Juilliard School with Dorothy DeLay, and at the Manhattan School
with Pinchas Zukerman, and Ani Kavafian. He also took part in "Solisti
dal Mondo" Program under renowned Canadian violinist Taras Gabora.
He completed a Doctorate of Music in Performance at the University
of Montreal, performing in his recitals among other works Paganini
Concertos #1 and 2 with his own cadenzas which present new technical
challenges of violin playing.
Presently Oleg Pokhanovski holds a position of a Professor of Violin
at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He recently initiated a
Concert Series in Winnipeg called "Oleg and Friends" where
he performs on violin and piano with Canadian and international guest
musicians. In addition to performing concerts and recording on violin
and piano, Pokhanovski makes arrangements and transcriptions for both
instruments, as well as for violin and viola. He made over 60 arrangements
overall. One of the artistic goals for Oleg Pokhanovski is performing
a series of double concertos for violin and piano with orchestras
in the same evening: Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and First Piano
Concerto, Brahms Violin Concerto and Second Piano Concerto, Tchaikovsky
Violin Concerto and Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto, Paganini First
Violin Concerto and Liszt First Piano Concerto, Prokofiev Second Violin
Concerto and Second Piano Concerto, Wieniawski First Violin Concerto
and Chopin Second Piano Concerto. These and many more are a part of
Pokhanovski's repertoire, and will be performed when opportunities
present themselves. To listen to violinist and pianist Oleg Pokhanovski,
